Scott ends World Champs campaign in fifth

Jamaica's Jordan Scott continued to show he was now one of the world's elite triple jumpers, finishing fifth at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan, earlier today with a best leap of 17.21 metres.

Scott, needing at least 17.55 metres to get among the medals, looked to have put in a big final effort but was whiskers over the board to bow out of what was an incredible competition.

Ahead of him, Pedro Pichardo regained the title he won in 2022 with a world-leading final leap of 17.91 metres.

Portugal's Cuban-born Pichardo had already taken the lead with a second-round leap of 17.55m, a mark which he amazingly equalled on his third attempt.

Italy's Andrea Dallavalle then jumped 5cm further than Scott, who was closing a memorable season in which he had already claimed three Diamond League wins, in Paris, Oslo, and Xiamen, and set a new personal best of 17.52m in Monaco.

The Italian then put in a lifetime's best 17.64 in the sixth round, only for Pichardo to respond by launching a 17.91-metre monster to retake the crown on the same Tokyo stage where he won the 2020 Olympic title, held a year later due to Covid restrictions.
