Win puts Cavalier back in Concacaf Caribbean Cup contention
Defending Concacaf Caribbean Cup champions Cavalier kept their hopes alive for a place in the knockout phase, after beating Defence Force FC of Trinidad 2-1 in their Group B match at the National Stadium last night.
Cavalier, who were winning their first match in three attempts, had to do it the hard way after going behind to Kaihim Thomas' second-minute goal.
However, goals from Daryl Massicot (22nd) and Christopher Ainsworth (83rd) gave the Rudolph Speid-coached team a much needed three points.
The win also lifted Cavalier into second place with four points, two behind group leaders Ciboa and one ahead of Defence Force FC.
The visitors took the lead on the first real attack, after Isiah Garcia broke down the right and crossed for Thomas to redirect the ball past Jaedine White, who got a touch, but could not keep the ball from crossing the line.
However, Cavalier grew into the game and drew level when Massicot took a through ball from Dwayne Allen and toed past Christopher Biggette in goal.
Cavalier had a great chance at the end of the first half, but Ainsworth could not make contact, under pressure, from four yards.
Both teams continued to go for the jugular after the break, and Massicot had a good chance in the 64th minute, but could not put Ainsworth's cross on target.
Moments later, Shaquille Stein just missed getting onto the end of a cross and Shamar Watson slashed Biggette's clearance wide.
Cavalier continued to be more industrious in attack, and with 10 minutes remaining, Jamilhio Ritgers blasted another good chance over from 18 yards.
However, they got the go-ahead goal two minutes later, when Adrian Reid Jr floated a ball over the Defence Force's defence to Ainsworth, who controlled six yards out and calmly slotted past Biggette.
Defence Force FC came close to an equaliser in time added, after Shaquille Bertrand made space down the right and crossed to Kevin Molina. But he kicked over from 10 yards.
